Condition Report

The canvas, on what is probably a late 19th century stretcher, has an old relining. This has resulted in a flattened paint surface. A glued patch to the lower right of the reverse of the canvas is visible through the front only under close inspection. The paint has thinned somewhat in the background but the paint surface overall is very stable. The surface looks to have been recently varnished. Small scattered is retouchings are visble along parts of the edges. Very few small scattered retouchings are visible in the black garment. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an even varnish which flouresces opaque and also confirms the above mentioned retouchings, as well as showing an older campaign of retouching, consisting of very localised and minor retouchings to the cheek and chin. These are not visible under normal light. Overall the work is largely free of retouching. The work is offered in a wood carved frame with a burr walnut effect, in good condition.
