NOTE

A charming scene of family life, the painting depicts Mr Hardie, a man of business who was often away for long periods, saying goodbye to his young family. The little girl, Blanche, not wanting her father to leave, would often hide his hat and scarf so that he could not go. The expression on the little girl's face indicates that this is what she is about to do. In the background a hat box can be seen on the top of a wardrobe and a doll lying on the floor signifying that the girl's father was more important to her than her toys.
