The present work can be compared with the picture of the same subject by Wtewael, dated by Lowenthal to 1625-27 (see A.W. Lowenthal, Joachim Wtewael and Dutch Mannerism, Groningen, 1986, D3, pl. 163). Lowenthal notes (loc. cit) that the direct gaze of the man on the far left of the composition may be a self-portrait and bears 'a pronounced resemblance' to the portrait of Peter by his father, Joachim Wtewael (1566-1638), in the Centraal Museum, Utrecht.
