Notes

PROPERTY FROM A BELGIAN PRIVATE COLLECTION
Although in his monograph on Joos de Momper Ertz writes that the oeuvre of his son Philippe is anything but definite, this painting clearly can be connected to works attributed to Philippe in the past.υ1 See for instance a Landscape with figures, sold, London, Phillips, 7 December 1993, lot 67, which shows a similar handling of colour and composition, as well as rendering of trees and light.

Philippe's colourful approach and composition scheme are indebted to his father's late works of the 1620s, as they reveal a more modern feeling. He had travelled to Italy with Jan Breughel the Younger (1601-1678) in the early 1620s and thus it is not surprising that we find many Italianate views among Philippe's oeuvre. 1.
