Item Overview

Description

AN IVORY RELIEF OF THE VIRGIN ADORING THE CHRIST CHILD

measurements note
13 by 9.7cm., 5 by 3¼in.

carved in low and high relief with the Virgin clasping her hands in prayer and looking down at the sleeping Infant Christ, mounted on an ebonised wood base

NOTE

The present ivory relief is based on a composition by Guido Reni of which several versions are known. It would have been taken from a print, as the image is reversed. Technically and stylistically it can be compared with work by the Dresden sculptor Paul Heermann (1673-1732). The agitated drapery and the domestic setting against a curtain with exterior behind are reminiscent of another relief of the Virgin and Child attributed to the circle of Heermann in the Staatliches Museum Schwerin, illustrated by Möller.
