This is a reduced replica of a design known in several versions. The prototype is in the Galleria Palatina in Florence, inv. 1912 (see M. Chiarini & S. Padovani, La Galleria Palatina e gli Appartamenti Reali di Palazzo Pitti: Catalogo dei dipinti, Florence 2003, p. 116, cat. no. 167, reproduced). Other versions of this composition are known, one of which is in the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence, inv. no. 1712 and another was offered New York, Christie's, 23 May 1997, lot 16.
