Notes

Viscount Deerhurst was the eldest son of George, 8th Earl of Coventry, and his wife, Emma Susanna Lygon, a daughter of the 1st Earl Beauchamp. In the present lot, he is shown wearing the uniform of his regiment, the 2nd Life Guards, of which he was made a lieutenant in December 1828 and promoted to captain in April 1835. Upon his marriage to Harriet Cockerell the following year, he resigned his commission, only to succumb to consumption in 1838. His son and heir, also called George William, therefore succeeded his grandfather as 9th Earl of Coventry in 1843.
