General Vladimir Fedorovich Adlerberg (1791-1884), was a Russian statesman and military commander during the reign of Alexander I and Nicholas I. As a decorated hero of the Napoleonic campaign of 1812, he was appointed aide-de-camp to the Grand Duke Nicholas, future emperor, and became his close friend and confidant. Later on as a member of the General Staff and Military Counsel, he remained very close to the Emperor and enjoyed a successful career. In 1841 Adlerberg was put in charge of the Postal Services and was credited with introducing the first Russian stamps and standardized postal envelopes. From 1852 for almost 20 years he served as Minister of Imperial Court and Property and continued to serve in various capacities during the reign of Alexander II, finally retiring in 1870.
