Sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby Mak van Waay, 26 November 1984, lot 128 (as Rembrandt School, circa 1660)

Notes

The free, rather angular treatment of the figure and the sketchy indication of the background are characteristic of other drawings by Ovens, see for example, the Portrait of a Married Couple (Bremen, Kunsthalle) and the Virgin and Child with St. Catherine and the Infant Baptist (Copenhagen, Den Kgl. Kobberstiksamling).υ1 Houbraken reports that Ovens studied with Rembrandt, probably in the 1630s, but he returned to his own country in 1651 and worked primarily for the Court of Holstein. 1.
