Notes

The present work may be compared to the Carnival Scene in the Campo San Paolo in the Correr Museum, Venice.

The Carnival Bullfight, an ironic imitation of Spanish bullfighting, was amongst the most popular of kermesses in Venice. It was held in various areas of Venice such as Campo San Polo, San Geremia and Campo Santa Maria Formosa, where dogs were unleashed against bulls previously released into the campo. Often, artificial torches were applied to the bulls' horns, to enhance the spectacle of the event and increase the animals' aggressiveness.
