Provenance: With M. de Beer, London (as Anglo-Flemish school, according to the Witt Library mount)With Spink & Sons, Ltd, London, 1946 (as Sir Peter Lely, according to a label on the reverse), where possibly acquired by Edith Lilian Greig (1906-1997), of Alcester, Warwickshire, by whom bequeathed to the present owner's parents, and thence by descentA portrait, on canvas, 113 x 91.4 cm., which may depict the present sitter and was sold at Christie's, 23 November 2005, was Attributed to John Michael Wright by Dr. Duncan Thomson. The present drawing would appear to be of superior quality and it is suggested that it may relate to a lost original by John Michael Wright.
