Attributed to Herbert Dalziel, British 1858-1941- Head study of a woman; black chalk, 61x47cm: together with a folio of seventeen further life studies of male and female nudes, portraits, etc., in black chalk on paper, one signed, three further framed drawings of standing nudes and two male nude studies in oils on unstretchered canvas, the folio with the label P Aprin Couleurs & Toiles 43 rue de Douai 43 Paris, 61x47.5cm (sheet) (average) (22) (part unframed) Note: Herbert Dalziel was the son of Thomas Dalziel, artist and illustrator, the youngest member of the 19th century family firm of reproductive engravers known as Dalziel Brothers. He studied at the West London School of Art, his early work showing the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites. In c. 1882-83 the artist studied under Alexandre Cabanel at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, elected a member of the New English Art Club in 1887 and exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Grosvenor Gallery in London. It may be that these drawings date from the artist's time in Paris.
