Notes

This very charming and unusual drawing is probably a design for a shrine. It is clearly designed as a niche and the inscription suggests there was to be glass in front of it. The saints would perhaps have been executed in stucco, and Mr. Holland's notes compare this with the use of stucco angels surrounding Calandrucci's Assumption on the ceiling of the nave of S. Maria del Orto, Rome. A large corpus of Calandrucci's drawings is in the Kunstmuseum, Düsseldorf. The present study is somewhat different in style, but the old inscription should be taken seriously.
