Portrait of a Gentleman, bust-length, in a black coat and hat oil on panel 221/2 x 191/2 in. (57.1 x 49.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Sir Humphry Ward, London. Charles Langley, Esq., Liverpool. Paulding Sale, Parke-Bernet, New York, 24 May 1944, lot 74, as Franciabigio. LITERATURE S.R. McKillop, Franciabigio, Doctoral Dissertation, Department of Fine Arts, Harvard University, 1966, II, p. 481, no. A88, as 'attributed paintings'; III, pl. XCII. S. R. McKillop, Franciabigio, California Studies in the History of Art, XVI, Berkeley, 1974, p. 207. NOTES In a letter dated 19 June 1987, Douglas Lewis, Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the National Gallery, Washington, D.C., wrote that Professor Sydney Freedberg tentatively suggested an attribution to Tommaso Lunetti (c.1495/96-1564) for the present lot.
