Description

ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES RODIUS (1802-1860) - Portrait of Elizabeth Wontner, daughter of John Wontner, governor of Newgate Prison and wife of the Reverend Thomas Hammond Tooke, signed and dated 1829, watercolour, 5 1/4" x 4" (see illustration). John Wontner was governor of Newgate Prison in 1822 where he won great renown and subsequently became Marshall of His Majesty's gaols. The artist Charles Rodius was convicted at Westminster for stealing a lady's bag in 1829 (the same date that the portrait was painted) and then transported to New South Wales.
