Notes

PROPEPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION
Adriaen Van Salm specialised in the art of penschilderij, drawings in ink with a reed pen on gesso-prepared panels or canvases. This technique, which enabled its practitioners to achieve a high level of detail, had been devised and perfected earlier in the century by the artist Heerman Witmont and Willem van de Velde, the Elder. Van Salm was born in Delfhaven and is cited as a draftman residing there in 1706 in the painters' guild of Delft.
