De belles dimensions, cette terre cuite aux détails précis est caractéristique de l''art flamand, tant par son
style que par son iconographie. Elle est un modèle destiné à être présenté à un commanditaire et constitue un précieux témoignage de l''inspiration de l''artiste. La collection Van Herck du Musée Royal d''Anvers réunit une
série d''avant-projets similaires, tous réalisés en Flandres aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles.
Ainsi, la représentation de la Vierge à l''Enfant régnant sur la Terre et triomphant du Mal est typique des
Flandres et de la Réforme ; cette iconographie fut étudiée vers 1675 par Lucas Faydherbe pour un marbre destiné à l''église saint Martin de Modave. Notre sculpture présente également un modelé semblable à celui d''une
Vierge à l''Enfant en terre cuite de Lucas Faydherbe conservée au British Museum de Londres et préparatoire
à un marbre conservé au Rockoxhuis Museum à Anvers. L''Enfant de la terre cuite londonienne est identique
à notre petit saint Jean-Baptiste : même attitude de profi aux bras tendus, même corps potelé coiff d''une
longue chevelure ondulée, même visage au nez droit et au menton pointu. Dans les deux terres cuites, les
mains de la Vierge sont fies, avec de longs doigts légèrement écartés dans une gestuelle gracieuse, son
décolleté profond est couvert d''un drapé plissé, des cabochons ferment sa robe.
De même, la cohérence de la composition, l''alternance entre un manteau ample et un vêtement fiement
plissé, le naturalisme des attitudes sont caractéristiques de l''art de Lucas Faydherbe et se retrouvent tant
dans notre terre cuite que dans la Vierge couronnant l''Autel principal de l''église Notre Dame du Val des Lys
à Malines, réalisé entre 1663 et 1672 ou dans celle de la Rencontre de la Vierge, de l''Enfant et de saint Ignace
sculpté par Faydherbe vers 1675 pour la cathédrale de Malines. Enfi, dans notre terre cuite, l''artiste insiste
sur le lien qui unit la mère à son enfant. Il lui touche le visage, gestuelle caractéristique de Lucas Fayhderbe,
comme le démontre notamment sa Mater Dolorosa réalisée vers 1644 pour la cathédrale de Malines.

The bordereau (bidding slip), indicating proof of payment, must be presented when property is collected. Storage costs are due at the current rate.

SMALL ITEMS purchased at auction and not collected after the sale will be transported to the PIASA offices and kept free of charge for a fortnight.
Thereafter the purchaser will be charged storage costs at the rate of € 3 + tax, per day and per lot.

INSURANCE
At the fall of the hammer the title of property shall be transferred to the purchaser, who assumes immediate responsibility for insurance. Uncollected property will be stored at the buyer's risk and expense.
PIASA declines liability for lots placed in storage.
