Attr. Allen Smith, Jr. (American, 1810-1890) Portrait of a woman. Oil on canvas, no signature found, framed in a fine oval spandral period frame in a softly gilt finish, the canvas size approx. 30 x 25, and overall with the frame approx. 38 x 32-1/2 A very well painted portrait of a pretty young woman with a mild expression, with her attire and hair in the mid-19th century manner. Note the lovely brooch at her throat, which depicts the micro-mosaic jewelry popularized at the time. The image shown is the Colosseum. The painting is not signed on verso, but has the stamp of the canvas maker.
