Item Overview

Description

Artist : NICHOLAS DE GRANDMAISON ~ [1892-1978] Canadian Title : Untitled - Seated Indian in Teepee Media : pastel on paper 33.25 x 25.5 in. / 84 x 65 cm. Dated: 1930 pre Notes: signed lower left; several repairs noted; framed Reference: : The same subject was also painted by the artist in a smaller portrait illustrated on page 31 of Drawn From the Past , the newly released publication on the artist. The work illustrated is in the University of Lethbridge Art Collection. During the period that the artist first came into contact with the Cree Indians on his initial visits to northern Manitoba in 1927, and later to The Pas in 1930, he painted a number of works with multiple subjects in interior settings. He subsequently moved westward to the Cree Reserve at Fort Qu'Appelle, and then to Alberta to the Blackfoot Reserve east of Calgary, and further south to Glenwood east of the Blood Reserve. Some of the smaller works of interior views from this period were included in the University of Lethbridge and Master Gallery Exhibition in 1989. As he continued to develop his technique in both oil and pastel, he favoured rendering just the face of the subject with attention to detail around the head, neck and shoulders. This is a very rare example of a subject in a full interior view and was not repeated. Provenance: ex-collection J.V. Dedora, B.C. ESTIMATE:
