José Luis Fariñas (Havana, Cuba, 1972) is a painter, draftsman, illustrator and writer. His oils are preserved in Las Américas Art Museum (Denver); Jewish Mizel Museum (Colorado) and at the Jewish Center Museum (Pittsburgh). He began his painting studies in 1984, at the "Paulita Concepción" School of Plastic Arts, Havana, graduating in 1987. Then he enrolled in the Academy of Plastic Arts of Havana, "San Alejandro", where he graduated with a Gold Title. He studied at the Instituto Superior de Arte, ISA, Havana, painting specialty from 1991 to 1995. He has made fifteen personal exhibitions and participated in forty-six collectives in Cuba and other countries. He has offered workshops and conferences at Cornell University, New York and other universities in the United States. His illustrations appear in important publications of the most prestigious publishers in Cuba. His narrations are anthologated by Salvador Redonet in Novísimos cuban narrators, Universidad de Zaragoza, 1999 and in El Ámphora del Diablo, Letras Cubanas, 2000. His texts have been translated into English and anthologized in Contemporary Cuban Literature 1985-1995, Wayne Finke, Peter Lang Publisher, London, in the process of being edited. His Incuria prose poetry notebook, Ediciones "Z", La Habana, 1993, which has been translated into English and Dutch, appears in specialized publications in Madrid and Amsterdam, and in digital edition on the Internet. The Gaceta de Cuba awarded him the Prometheus Creation Grant in its 2002 edition. It is included in the Author Index of Cuban Literature on the Internet of The City University of New York, in the annals of the American Biographic Institute and in The Contemporary Who’s who of Professionals 2005. He is a member of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, UNEAC, as well as of the International Association of Writers and Artists, IWA. He has made 32 personal exhibitions in Cuba, the United States, Panama, Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Austria and Japan, and 132 group exhibitions in countries such as Cuba, England, Spain, Germany, Austria, France, Japan and the United States.
