Notes

Like his younger brother Louis, Arthur Grimshaw's style was very much influenced by the work of his father, John Atkinson Grimshaw. He is not known to have exhibited in London, and his work appears infrequently at auction. He seems to have been at his most prolific between 1890 and 1900. As Alexander Robertson observes, Arthur was more interested in a career in music than painting, and left the Grimshaw home 'in order to compose and at the same time take up the post of organist at St. Anne's Cathedral, Leeds'.

Robertson, Alexander, Atkinson Grimshaw, London, 1988, p.123.
