Item Overview

Description

Arnold Gross (1929-2015) Etching. Professionally framed and matted. Measures 21"x17"x1". Weight 3 pds 13 oz. PROVENANCE: A Pawleys Island SC Estate. Arnold Gross was born in 1929 in Torda, Romania from where, in 1947, he fled to Hungary. He began studying at a young age at the Superior School of Beautiful Arts. Major influences upon him artistically were his teachers Hincz, Kadar, Konecsni, and Koffan and his friends Bela Kondor and Vladimir Szabo. Following the lead of his father, Karoly Gross, who was a painter and professor of drawing in Transilvania, Arnold Gross began his professional career using watercolors. In the 1950s, he developed a personal style as a graphic artist, and he is now known for his in-depth and detailed copper engravings. They mimic the Old Master artists including Rembrandt. Gross's engravings suggest that which is dreamlike and surreal, especially cities and their inhabitants whose imaginative worlds are created from fragments of reality and are filled with fairies and fantasies.
