Description

ARISTIDE CHAPUROT (FRENCH, ACT. 1838-1849). THE BRIG LIMA OF PORTLAND, CAPT. JOHN HIGGINS COMMANDER, ENTERING THE PORT OF CETTE (SETE), 1849. Built in 1829 by George and Ivory Lord of Kennebunk, Maine, and later owned by Winslow and Little of Portland, the "Lima" served in coastal, Carribean and transatlantic trade. Watercolor on paper, 16 1/2 x 25 inches, sight. Signed and dated "Aristide Chapurot, Cette 1849," l.r. In a gilt period frame.
Literature: Chapurot painted a companion watercolor of the "Lima" leaving the port of Cette, illustrated in Brewington, "The Marine Paintings and Drawings in the Peabody Museum," p. 31, no. 121.
