Description

Arild Rosenkrantz (Danish 1870-1964) The River of Life pastel, signed 42cm x 56cm Original George Nemen designed frame Note: Baron Arild Rosenkrantz was throughout his life a 'spiritual seeker'. He reached the peak of his spirituality in 1912 when he met Rudolf Steiner, the creator of 'Anthroposophy', the connection of human understanding with the spiritual world. Born in Frederiksborg Castle, Denmark, son of the Danish minister to Italy, Rosenkrantz trained at the Academie Julian in Paris and in 1888 he was introduced by his Scottish mother to the French writer, art critic and mystic, Josephin Peladan. In the years 1892-1895 he exhibited at Peladan's symbolist Salon de la Rose and Croix in Paris. In 1896 whilst in the US he worked on the Gallatin window and designed a window for Tiffany. He had meany commissions including twelve large panels for the ceiling in the dining room at Claridges Hotel, London, and made stained glass windows and bronze sculptures for a number of British churches and castles. e also illustrated the Danish edition of Edgar Allen Poe's 'Tales of Mystery Adventure' and many other literary works. Subsequently he exhibited work at the Abby Gallery, the Beaux Arts Gallery, the Baillie Gallery and above all, Cooling and Sons Gallery where he had annual exhibitions in the 1930's. In 2007 ten of Rosenkrantz's original panels were reinstalled in the entrance hall of the Royal Academy of Music, London. As reported in an article in The Times newspaper, the paintings had been lost for nearly a century but after being discovered and painstakingly restored, were reinstalled at the Royal Academy on 31st January 2007 and will remain there on long term loan from the Roseholm Foundation. A major collection of his paintings is on permanent exhibition at Rosenholm Castle, Denmark where Rosenkrantz died in 1964.
