Item Overview

Description

The M.C.C. Tour in Australia, 1903-4, Warner's Team

London: The Cricket Press, 1904. 8vo., 14 full-length half-tone portraits, original pictorial wrappers. Provenance: J.W. Goldman (bookplate).

GOLDMAN COPY of this "3d" booklet. Under Warner's astute captaincy, England won 3-2 and recovered the Ashes after undergoing four successive defeats. In the opening match at Sydney, R.E. Foster made 287 on his first debut. In the next at Melbourne, Australia were helpless against Rhodes who took 15 for 124 on a sticky wicket. B.J.T. Bosanquet first introduced the googly in this series, and "puzzled all the Australian batsmen whenever he struck a length". This was the first tour when the M.C.C. were responsible for the selection and management of the England team. FINE CONDITION. Padwick 4431.
