The classicism of this sketch indicates a date in the latter half of the artist's life, at a time when Zucchi was strongly influenced by Robert Adam, whom he met around 1760, and by his wife Angelica Kaufmann, whom he married in 1776. It is possible that this pair of works were intended as preliminary studies for decorative panels in one of the many English country homes in which Zucchi worked between 1770-1784. The most important of these houses decorated in neo classicising style is probably Home House in Portman Square, London, the work for which was executed in 1773.
