*Antonio d'Enrico, called Tanzio da Varallo (1575/80-1635) study of an angel. Red chalk on paper washed red. 222 by 196mm. Provenance: Kurt Klemperer (bears his mark, verso). This newly discovered drawing by Tanzio is a study for the decoration of the chapel of the Angelo Custode in the basilica of San Gaudenzio in Novara. The angel, appearing to the left of the Madonna, forms part of the central group of figures in the vault of the chapel, together with Christ and San Gaudenzio. The contract Tanzio received for this commission is dated 19 February 1627 and from it we gather that he was contracted to fulfill the entire scheme with no help from assistants. It was finished in January 1629 (see Tanzio da Varallo, exh. cat., Milan, Palazzo Reale, 2000, pp.137-141,
