Notes

We are grateful to Albert Blankert for proposing the attribution to Antoni Goubau on the basis of photographs.

Antoni Goubau was apprenticed by Jan Farius and became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1636. The most decisive moment of his career was his stay in Rome, circa 1644-1650, where he was greatly influenced by the Bamboccianti: Lingelbach was in Rome probably by 1644 as well as Michiel Sweerts, and Miel was already there in the early 1630s. Back in the Netherlands, Goubau painted Italianate landscapes, often including Roman monuments.
He is also well known for his illustrious pupils, including Nicolas de Largillière and Jan Frans van Bloemen.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
