Description

Anton Goossens, Belgian 1903-1980- Untitled, abstract composition; oil and texture on industrial board, unsigned, circa 1950. Note: Anton Goossens, Belgian, 1903-1980 was a fixture in the eccentric Antwerp art scene of the 1950s and 60s. His work was championed by the young Belgian avant-garde, who included it in their own provocative exhibitions in the late 1950s. From small "three-minute drawings" to large textured paintings on industrial insulation paneling, the works reflected Goossen's fascination with the human face and form as archetypal modernist image. Born in 1903 East Flanders, Belgium,1914-1921. Lived in Penzance and Plymouth, 1921-1925: Lived in the Hague, Netherlands. In 1925 arrived in Antwerp 1929-1935, attending the Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp 1961-1963. Attended the High School of Fine arts , Antwerp 1961-1974 where he received several awards from the Ministry of National Education and Culture. During 1968-1973 the Plantyn and Moretus Museum and Prentenkainet, both Antwerp public museums, brought several drawings and watercolours as well as purchases made by the Royal Albert Library, Brussels.
