Antoine-Jean Bail (French, 1830-1918) KITCHEN INTERIOR WITH YOUNG WOMAN KNITTING, 1865 signed and dated lower left oil on canvas 76 by 54cm., 30 by 21.25in. Provenance: de Vere's, Dublin, 27 June 2000, lot 73 Antoine-Jean Bail was an academically trained French genre painter who was heavily influenced by the Dutch masters especially in their depiction of scenes from daily life. Bail's style demonstrates a devotion to the past reflecting the artist's admiration for fellow French artist's, such as Jean Siméon Chardin, many of whom he would have seen at the Musée du Louvre in Paris. Bail along with his artist son; Joseph Bail (1862-1921) exhibited at the annual Salon exhibitions in Paris.
