CATALOGUE NOTE

In 1780 Rooker was elected to the status of Associate of the Royal Academy. He was among the first group of painters, sculptors and engineers, sixteen in all, to be elected to this rank. The present watercolour is an early work by him, demonstrating through his controlled pen work and delicate colouring echoes of the work of his drawing master, Paul Sandby. The careful draughtsmanship also betrays his initial training as an engraver
