Anonymous Artist c. 1840 Three-Quarter Portrait of Adalbert Stifter (Oberplan/Horni Plana 1805 - 1868 Linz), Oil on canvas, 114 x 84,5 cm, framed, (W) Adalbert Stifter was born on 23.10.1805 in Oberplan (today Horni Plana). He studied for a degree in Law and later also graduated with degrees in Mathematics and Natural History from the University of Vienna. Stifter occupied himself both as home tutor and as painter and author. From 1840 he produced stories for almanacs and newspapers, which appeared between 1844-50 in reworked form under the title "Studies". In 1848 Stifter travelled to Linz, where he stayed until 1850 working as a school inspector, in 1853 he became a countryside conservationist and was a founder of the Austrian National Gallery. In the following years, he wrote further novels, including among others a coming-of-age novel "Der Nachsommer" (An Indian Summer) in 1857.
