In the series Frontstage, Steketee employs her fascination with theatre lighting and staging to focus on her subject's movements in what she calls, 'the theatre of daily life'. She goes on to explain this interest, saying: 'artificial light is an instrument to create a new reality, to suggest a small story by bringing details to the surface and relegate the context in which the photograph is taken to the background.' (Zoom, p.19). With a painterly approach, Steketee illuminates the everyday life of Iranians and investigates the accuracy of Western media portrayals of the country and its citizens.

Steketee studied photography at the Academy of Fine Arts St. Joost, Breda. Her work has been included in numerous international exhibitions and is held in private and institutional collections. She is the recipient of several grants and awards, including a 2007 grant from The Netherlands Foundation of Visual Arts, Design and Architecture. In 2006, The Guardian Weekly featured her series Frontstage. She lives and works in Amsterdam.
