Von Hausswolff aims for a phenomenological experience for viewers. Questioning ideas of how we engage with visual objects, her matter-of-fact images force us to examine which elements of our gaze we employ when looking. She says: 'Photography itself is so deceptive, it's so enjoyable and it fools you so beautifully with its surface and distance...The photograph feels so accessible and close and naked, but of course it isn't. It's really an image, in contrast to so much in contemporary art, and that is important to me...I resist making pictures that are more than pictures.' (Annika von Hausswolff In Dialogue, Propexus, 2004, p.63)

Von Hausswolff studied at Konstfack, University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm. Her works have been included in dozens of international solo and group exhibitions and are held in the permanent collections of The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Fotomuseum Winterthur; and Huis Marseille, Amsterdam, among others. Von Hausswolff was chosen to represent Sweden in the Nordic Pavilion of the 1999 Venice Biennale. She lives and works in Gothenburg, Sweden.
