Notes

Anna-Maria Hodgson was born in 1828 and was the daughter of the Norwich School artist David Hodgson (1798-1864). Her husband, Alfred George Stannard, was the son of another Norwich School artist, Alfred Stannard (1806-1889). Although a highly accomplished artist, very little is known of her and very few works have been recorded. None have previously been sold at auction directly attributed to her.

The label on the wicker basket reads 'Westwick Hall', and together with the portrait of John Berney Petre painted by her husband, also offered in this sale, this painting represents the first known example of this husband and wife painting together.
