Finntown was the name for West Berkley, California beginning around the turn of the century. While not the dominant population, the Finns in Berkeley created a strong presence with their communal organizations. They built churches, erected the Finnish Hall and founded the Berkeley Co-Ops, a chain of cooperative retail grocery and hardware stores.
