Notes

Charlotte Susannah Elizabeth Layard was one of two daughters born to the Very Reverend Charles Peter Layard. She married Lieutenant-General Albemarle Bertie, 9th Earl of Lindsey (1744–1818) in 1809. They had three children. The first-born child is best known as Lady Charlotte Guest (1812–1895), an important figure in the study of the Welsh language, famed for her pioneering English translation of the major medieval work, 'the Mabinogion'. They also had two sons, George Augustus Frederick Albemarle Bertie, 10th Earl of Lindsey DL (1814-1877) and Montagu Peregrine Bertie, 11th Earl of Lindsey DL, JP (1815-1899). Montagu achieved the rank of Captain in the Grenadier Guards. Like his older brother, he also held the office of Deputy Lieutenant of Lincolnshire and later held the office of Justice of the Peace for the same county.

Upon her husband's death, Charlotte was styled, 'Dowager Countess of Lindsey'. Three years later, she married Reverend Peter William Pegus (d. 1860) and they had a daughter, Maria Antoinetta (d. 1893). Maria married Charles Gordon, 10th Marquess of Huntly (1792–1863), a Scottish peer and politician in 1853. Together they had fourteen children.
