André Jasmin 1922 - Canadian oil on board Géologie AOL1107-E05380-01 48 x 28 1/4 inches 121.9 x 71.7 centimeters signed and on verso signed, titled and dated 1955 Provenance:By descent from the Artist to the present Private Collection, Montreal Exhibited:The Collector's Gallery, New York, October 1956 Jasmin was born in Montreal in 1922. He studied at l'École du meuble alongside Paul-Émile Borduas. In the 1940s he joined the Société d'art contemporain founded by John Lyman. From 1958 - 1988 he taught painting and drawing at the renowned École des beaux-arts in Montréal. His work has been featured in various exhibitions at the Fine Arts Museum in Montreal and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It can also be found in important collections such as the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée du Québec, and the Contemporary Art Museum of Montreal. Jasmin used rich and powerful colours to express his artistic vision, which can be traced back to his admiration of Pierre Bonnard. Jasmin revealed that it was his acute observation of nature which led to the development of his unique approach to the pictorial language. These two outstanding works, influenced by Rouault, are from a series Jasmin did in the 1950s for which he received a prize from the Concours de peinture de la province de Québec. They are fine examples of the lyrical abstraction which characterizes Jasmin's oeuvre.
