Item Overview

Description

DORA WAHLROOS (Finish 1870-1947)
Study for Inspiration – 1895
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated lower right Dora Wahlroos Paris 1895 and verso of canvas with Paris artists supplies stencil of A BOUCHE
32 inches x 23.75 inches (81cm x 60cm)

Provenance:
Private collection USA

The offered lot would appear to be a final study for Wahlroos’ self-portrait titled Inspiration, painted in Paris in 1895 and now housed in the Turku Museum of Art, Turku, Finland. The offered lot follows closely the finished work with the exception of a few minor differences primarily being perhaps slightly less finished.

Wahlroos was born in Pori, Findland on the Gulf of Bothnla. She first studied at the Turku Drawing School in 1886–1890 and was one of the artists who joined Westerholm in the artists colony at Önningeby on the island of Åland. She was accepted to the Finnish Art Society in 1890–1891, where in the Fall of 1890 she became engaged to sculptor Emil Wikström. The two went to study together at Paris in 1891–1892 where she won third prize in a competition with her painting By the Wash Basin in 1893 and the same year she was granted a stipend. In Spring 1895 she was back at Paris and completed her self-portrait Inspiration. By this point she had separated with Wikström, and executed paintings of local Finnish sceneries as well as altar paintings. In August 1900 she traveled to Paris for the 1900 Paris Expedition, and from there she headed to the village of Antignano in Livorno, Italy, where Elin Danielson-Gambogi was living with her husband Raffaello Gambogi. However, it turned into a slight misadventure for her as Raffaello fell deeply in love with her. Subsequently, she returned to Finland and became somewhat of a recluse after this, spending more time with her family first in Turku and then in Kauniainen, where they bought a villa. Although she painted her entire life even until the end, her later works didn't receive as much recognition. She died in 1947 from complications following an accident.

All statements contained in the catalog or in any bill of sale, invoice, or elsewhere as to authorship, period, culture, source, origin, measurement, quality, rarity, provenance, importance, exhibition and literature of historical relevance, or physical condition ARE QUALIFIED STATEMENTS OF OPINION AND NOT REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES. 3. Auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any property before the sale and shall have no liability whatsoever for withdrawal of property.

5. On the fall of the Auctioneer's hammer, title to the offered lot will pass to the highest bidder acknowledged by Auctioneer, and such bidder thereupon assumes full risk and responsibility, and will pay the full purchase price plus Buyer's Premium and any applicable fees (such as sales tax and shipping) IMMEDIATELY upon receipt of invoice.

6. A Buyer's Premium of 25% (30% for internet bidders) of the successful bid price will be added to the purchase price & is payable by the Buyer as part of the total purchase price.

Auctioneer shall have the right to have the Buyer obtain, at the Buyer's expense, the opinion of two recognized experts in the field, mutually acceptable to Auctioneer and Buyer, before Auctioneer determines whether to rescind a sale under this limited warranty. If requested, Auctioneer will provide Buyer with the names of acceptable recognized experts. Buyer is advised that said lot should be inspected by themselves or their agents to their own level of satisfaction prior to bidding and purchase, but in any event, by the time they have purchased the item, as the limited warranty referred to herein expires sixty (60) days from the date of sale.
