Notes

Tracy attended Oberlin College and Northwestern University of Chicago, but between 1867 and 1868 studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Initially a painter of landscapes, he also exhibited a full-length portrait of his wife at the Salon of 1874. In 1881 Tracy moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, where he painted the majority of the sporting dog paintings for which he became known. He later moved to Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
