Description

An English Ceramic Charger, Charles Ferdinand Hurten (1820-1901),
of circular form with a gilt rim, painted in impasto to show roses and dense foliage before a cloudy sky, signed C F Hurten.
Diameter 16 1/8 inches.

Condition Report

Overall good condition. Some light surface scratches and few pits to glaze throughout. Some rubbing to gilt and few frets to the rim. Two chips to the foot, but possibly firing flaws.

Footnote:
Charles Ferdinand Hurten's paintings on porcelain at the 1858 Paris Exhibition eventually led him to employ with the Copeland manufactory at Stoke-on-Trent. He was renowned as a painter of fruits and flowers, and was commissioned for works at the London International Exhibition of 1862 as well as the grand drawing room at Chatsworth House.
