Item Overview

Description

AN ANTIQUE MINIATURE BROOCH, BY JOHN BOGLE
The oval miniature depicting a gentleman within a border of half pearls
Signed I.B. and dated 1782
John Bogle (1746-1803) was a skilled portrait miniaturist, born in Scotland where he studied at the Foulis Academy in Glasgow. In 1770 he moves to London. Here he exhibits his miniatures at the Society of Artists and some other works, including a self portrait, were shown at the Royal Academy. At the end of his life, Bogle moves back to Scotland where he dies in 1803. Very little is known about his life, but since his work can be found in the National Galleries of Scotland, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in London, a brilliant miniaturist he was for sure.
