Item Overview

Description

Frisia Orientalis - Nova Tabula Totius Frisiae Orientalis by Dutch engraver Carel Allard, published in Amsterdam. The plate size is approx. 18" x 22" and overall size is approx. 21" x 24-1/2". Hand-coloring on laid paper, depicting the East Frisian Region of Northwestern Germany. The map is hinged to a backing board and matted. The exquisitely decorated cartouche depicts classical deities with a background of classical ruins. Poseidon (god of the sea) is depicted sitting in water leaning over a flowing vase; nearby is a Nymph (river goddess) pouring water from an amphora into the river. Also depicted is Demeter (goddess of grain and harvest) with a sickle in her right hand and wheat sheaf in her left hand and Aphaea (goddess of agriculture) standing beside a cow and a sheep with a pitchfork in her hands. Three cherubs appear to measure the plinth with compasses and a rope. The cartouche is topped by figures of a Faun holding a round stone over his head; three cherubs play with a goose and lean over an empty barrel, and the goddess of abundance holds a Cornucopia in her left hand. She points at the wreath encircling the image of a Harpy and four stars.
