This elegant, massive 17.25in x 12.5in piece, in soft high relief, pictures the ship sinking below the waves as the goddess Columbia solemnly holds a large shield marked "Patriotism ... Devotion." "This tablet is cast from metal recovered from the U.S.S. Maine ." The sculptor was Charles Keck the foundry J.N.O. Williams, Inc. of New York, and the date 1913. It is marked "Tablet No. 417," and is in beautiful condition. We have handled some outstanding Maine and Spanish American War items over the years, but never an example of this monumental plaque.
