ALVARO GUEVARA (Chilean, 1894-1951) 'Maruja', encaustic on paper laid down on canvas, 19 1/2" x 13 1/2" (see illustration) Provenance: P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., London Michael Parkin Gallery, London Exhibited: P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., London, 'Alvaro Guevara: A Chilean painter in London and Paris', 1974-1975, no. 18 Literature: Diana Holman-Hunt, 'Latin Among Lions', London, n.d., illus. Painted in 1943 this picture depicts Maruja, the artist's niece. The artist moved to London as a young boy and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He became an established society portrait painter and famously depicted Edith Sitwell in 1916 in a picture named 'The Editor of Wheels', which currently hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
