Description

Costumes and trades of the Arctic Circle from Carel Allard's wonderful study of exotic costume and faraway places. His work was published in Leiden by Pieter van der Aa circa 1690 and was engraved by Aldert Meyer.

This 17th century depiction of an Inuit couple, he with fishes and she with an arctic fox, comes from Carel Allard's superb Orbis habitabilis oppida et vestitus... which portrayed the styles of clothing of various people around the world and some of their towns and cities.

The Davis Srait lies between Baffin Island and Greenland. There is another strait, the Hudson Strait, between Baffin Island and the Canadian mainland.
