Description

ALLAN CUNNINGHAM (1784-1842). Scottish poet and author who wrote popular song lyrics as well, particularly remembered for "A Wet Sheet and a Flowing Sea" as well as his six-volume work Lives of the Most Eminent British Painters, Sculptors and Architects. Uncommon ALS, 1p, 5"x8", "27 Lower Belgrave Place" [London], Jun 26, 1828. Regarding a transmittal for publication he writes, "Find a good place for the enclosed in your next Gazette. You may print it safely for it is naught but truth. Or put on your hat and go and see our friend David and his paintings and admire and believe. His health is not good but it is mending..." Darkly penned and signed. Fine. Mounted beside portrait with facsimile signature, 33/4"x6", within embossed frame. Overall 17"x131/2".
