Description

ALKEN, George (1794-1835). ORIGINAL WATERCOLOURS -- A collection of 9 original pencil-and-watercolour drawings (87 x 133mm), the last indistinctly signed 'G. Alken' lower right, undated [?1820s], window-mounted in oblong 8° album (180 x 240mm), each captioned in pencil on the mount. (Slightly faded, a few spots). Full red morocco gilt by Riviere, spine in six compartments with raised bands and Schwerdt crest at foot, gilt fillets on turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance: C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate; his sale, 27 June 1939, lot 1192) -- Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (bookplate; his sale, Christie's London, 26-27 January 2006, lot 623).

Delicate designs attributed to Henry Alken by Schwerdt and in the Duke of Gloucester sale catalogue, but now identified as the work of his brother, George, the last design with his initial 'G' rather than Henry Alken's 'H'. Schwerdt III, p. 199.
