Description

Alice Standish Buell (American/Illinois, 1892-1964), "Madame John's Legacy - New Orleans," (Louisiana), etching on paper, titled in pencil lower left, signed lower right, measures 10 x 7 3/8 inches to the plate mark, overall in the matt it measures 19 x 14 inches. CONDITION: Good, one or two light spots in the lower margin, matt discolored, offered unframed. Alice Standish Buell was born in Oak Park, Illinois but later moved to White Plains, New York and Woodstock, Vermont. She studied at Oberlin College in Ohio, New York's Art Students League, as well as with printmaker Martin Lewis (1881-1962. A member of the board of the Art Students League for six years, Buell also served as the Secretary of the Pen and Brush Club from 1956 to 1858. Her etchings were exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and other museums, and she participated in Chicago's Century of Progress exposition in 1933 and 1934 as well as New York's World's Fair in 1939. She had studios in Woodstock, Vermont, and Sanibel, Florida-places that often became the subject of her work.
