Notes

PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN
The present watercolour dates from circa 1833, when the artist was travelling in Europe. Vickers has chosen the Gendarmenmarkt, a magnificent square in Berlin, as his subject. The square is dominated by two domed structures, the Deutsche Dom and the Franzosische Dom, which were constructed between 1701 and 1785. The third major building, the Concert Hall, can just be seen in between the two churches. This was opened to the public in 1821.
